MUZE'UM L, LIGHT & LANDSCAPE
COME ON A SUNNY (SUN)DAY FOR THE GAME OF LIGHT AND SHADOW
A contemporary museum built on the LIGHTMERIDIAN in the Bergstraat. An exhibition at MUZE’UM L– that stands for Muze, Light and Landscape – looks different at every moment of the day. Thoughtful architectural elements turn the building into a gigantic sculpture, casting light and shadow to the rhythm of the sun. It is a MUSE or source of inspiration to create works related to Light or Landscape.
Although MUZE’UM L is privately run, it benefits from a welcome cooperation from the city of Roeselare, the province of West Vlaanderen, West toer and the ‘Agency for nature and forest’. MUZE'UM L is located in the ‘Bergmolenbos’ district, the green lung of the city.
IS A CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE TO DISCOVER THE LIGHT MERIDIAN
A 30 m long building with a 50 cm opening (here on the right) for the LIGHT MERIDIAN
architect: marc van schuylenberg
The architecture makes geometric drawings by the sun and shadows according to the time of day
MUZE'UM L IS ALSO THE INFO-POINT OF THE LIGHT MERIDIAN
A ‘meridian’ or ‘noon line’ runs exactly north-south.when the sun is exactly at its zenith (the highest point in the sky) the sunlight falls vertically downwards andf there is no more shadow left and right (east and west) // architect marc van schuylenberg made a slit of 50cm directly through the roof for sunlight to drop a light line on the ground. // this local and luminous longitude-line (3°7'45”east) is called "the light meridian"
Via google earth, you can see that this north longitude is in the ice of the north pole and does not go out of the water than in continental Europe // the place is exactly and coincidental at the lighthouse of blankenberge in belgium. The "light meridian" goes further through france and goes to thje mediterranen see at coincidental the lighthouse of palamos in spain.
see below how the sun projects light on the ground depending on the time of day

through any place on earth an imaginary north-south line runs from the north pole to the south pole: the light meriian / simultaneously for all places on the meridian, the sun shines every day a few moments perpendicular to the meridian ( at the 'real’ noon ! ).
this tight straight line could now be visualised by natural and artistic 'in situ’ works.

short explanation of longitude and meridians
Longitude
A longitude is an imaginary line across the earth's surface from pole to pole that is perpendicular to the equator. there are 360 degrees to the globe, 180 degrees east and 180 degrees west of "0" degrees greenwich (internationally agreed on October 22, 1884)
Meridian
A meridian connects all the points where the sun is simultaneously at its highest point.
Brief history
Before 1884 there were many known zero meridians such as Cadiz, Ferro, Fulkova, Greenwich, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Naples, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Stockholm. This resulted in a conflict between the zero degrees of Paris and that of Greenwich, which therefore internationally became the marker
